The Making of the Toronto Dollar Video

By Jan Roget

It was a lucky day for Toronto Dollar Community Projects, when Susan Flanders, experienced producer, and daughter of John Flanders who is a board member of Toronto Dollar, offered to work on the creation of a video, “Community Counts, the Toronto Dollar Story”. She had the expertise, the contacts, the skill and talents and, as it turned out, just a tiny sliver of time to give.

Before much work was underway, she learned she had been offered a job in Edmonton. The speed with which John Flanders and his daughter Susan flew into the work was breathtaking to those who were involved. Within days, the filming, writing, interviewing, transcribing, structuring, searching for archival footage, editing, obtaining of clearances, mixing and myriad details took place in the midst of Susan’s preparation for her new job, moving and selling her house, furnishings and clearing out her basement which had been used as storage for other people. Multi-tasking took on new meaning in this vortex of action. From the first conversation about the idea to the final product was less than two months. Susan and John worked up to the last minute and the next morning, Susan was in her car, driving to Edmonton.
